Hok-Si-La Park Beach Picking Trip

Trip Leader: Beth Christianson

When: Sunday, May 19th 2019 at 10:00 am to 4:00pm

Where: Hok-Si-La City Park, 2500 North Hwy 61, Lake City, MN 55041

Meeting Location: We will meet at the Hok-Si-La Park in the parking lot

Type of Mineral/Rock Collected: Quartz, granite, jasper, agate, carnelian, and much more.

Trip Description: Hok-Si-La is a 252 acre, municipally owned and operated park located on the Minnesota side of Lake Pepin.  The park offers spectacular views of the Mississippi River, Lake Pepin, and the surrounding bluffs. We will take the day to explore the mile long stretch of Mississippi River shoreline and do some rock picking. The park allows agate collecting. Late April will be a good time to see what hidden treasures the ice may have uncovered over the winter. For more info on Hok-Si-La Park:                       http://www.hoksilapark.org/home.html

Collecting Fees: None.

Rockhound Tools Needed: A small bucket, bag, other type of container. Pockets will make do in a pinch. Sturdy closed toes shoes or boots. Possibly a dry change of socks and shoes in case your feet get wet.

Difficulty of Collection Site: There is one small/short hill to descend and climb for access to and from the beach, respectively. Rocky areas of the beach contain uneven terrain. (2/10)

Safety Considerations: We will be on the shore of Lake Pepin. There are no lifeguards on duty. Please approach or enter the water with great caution.

Other Considerations: All ages are welcome, but small children need to be closely supervised at all times. Collecting will be rain or shine, except if there is lightning.

Release Forms: The standard MMC release form can be used for this trip. It is located on the MMC website: https://minnesotamineralclub.org/public-documents/

Please complete in advance, if possible.

Directions: The park is located 65 miles south of the Twin Cities on U.S. Highway 61.  35 miles northeast of Rochester on Highway 63, and two miles north of Lake City on Highway 61/63.  Minnesota side of the Mississippi River.  Midpoint of Lake Pepin.

Approximate Distance and Travel Time: From Falcon Heights City Hall: 70 miles, 1 hr and 20 min                                                                                              From Rochester, MN: 42 miles, 50 minutes

We are also new, and I just got access to the member site. I would have like to bring my family of 5. Let me know if you add another trip or if you would have room for at least 2 more.
