Trip Description:

Iowa is best known for its excellent geodes from the Keokuk area and also for calcite and barite crystals from abundant carbonate sedimentary rocks exposed throughout the state. These rocks can also provide excellent fossil collecting from road cuts and quarries.  In the past MMC members have been very pleased with the collecting at this site.

We will be collecting geodes from several locations in Iowa and Illinois and Missouri.  Bring several 5 gallon buckets.  Costs are about $20-$25 per bucket.  Larger geodes can be priced by the pound, costs vary.

This will be my first time in Keokuk – excited!!

  2. Does the 2019 Keokuk Trip include going to the Amish farm???
(We had a wonderful time fossil hunting in the river and eating delicous homemade pastries at the Amish farm a few years ago on this trip).

Hello! The exact locations for each day are still being determined. I know the Amish farm is a very popular collection site, and it’s at the top of the list for the Saturday location. When I’m able to contact the owners of the farm and make arrangements, this page will be updated with that info.

Never been to this site so looking forward to it!

I would also recommend waders. Some searching can be done in rivers and boots might not be quite enough to stay dry.

Please put me down for the waiting list along with my wife Laurel and daughter Danielle Bissonnette

Sorry, but I had to cancel my booking – family activity.

  9. Jen, I emailed but Jim and Bethany and I won’t be attending. I do not want to drive down tomorrow night in this weather. I don’t think it’s safe. It would not let us cancel in My Bookings but I did send you an email.
