Quarry Hill Field Trip

Sunday, May 5th, 2019  8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Trip Leader:  Jen Sorenson

Type of Rock/Mineral Collected: Ordovician fossils including: Brachiopods, Trilobites, Cephalopods, and Gastropods

Trip Description: Quarry Hill Nature Center is located on the eastern edge of Rochester, MN about 1.5 hours from the Twin Cities. There are actually two quarries within the park. The newer quarry is located a short hike up the hill itself, while the older quarry is located in the woods to the southwest of the newer quarry. There is also a small creek that runs past the older quarry that is worth exploring as well. Collecting can be done by surface searching and/or working the Platteville limestone. For more information about Quarry Hill Nature Center: https://www.qhnc.org/

Where and When We Will Meet: Parking lot of Shopko, located in Rochester at the intersection of N Broadway Ave and 37th St NE, at 8:30 am.  (Exact address of Shopko: 3708 Hwy 63 North, Rochester, MN 55906)

Collecting Fees:  None. Entrance to the park is free.

Difficulty of Collecting Site: A short hike uphill on an unpaved trail is required to reach the newer quarry. The area beneath the quarry wall is uneven terrain and loose rock.  (3/10)

Safety Considerations:  Eye protection is a must. Breaking rock with hammers and chisels will result in flying pieces of rock. You must always be aware of your surroundings and of your fellow rockhounds. The quarry walls are quite high and a fall would result in serious injury. Please watch your step.

Vehicle Restrictions: Any vehicle can make it to the meet location and collection location.

Other Considerations: All ages are welcome, but small children need to be closely supervised at all times.  The quarries can be muddy or even filled with shallow amounts of water at times, especially spring. Collecting is still possible, just more dirty and soggy.

Rockhound Tools Needed:  Sturdy closed toed shoes or boots, hat, sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, drinking water, safety goggles/glasses, rock hammer, small sledge hammer, chisel, pry bar, container(s) for storing collected fossils

Release Forms: The standard MMC release form can be used for this trip. It is located on the MMC website: https://minnesotamineralclub.org/public-documents/

Please complete in advance, if possible.
