Royalton MN Staurolite Trip
Trip Leader: Jennifer Sorenson
When: Saturday, September 7th, 2019 from 9:00am to 2:00pm
Where: Blanchard Dam near Royalton, MN
Meeting Location: Holiday Station, 208 US-10, Royalton, MN 56373
Type of Mineral Collected: Staurolite
Trip Description: A chance to make a rare crystal find. Staurolites, better known as “fairy stones” or “fairy crosses” are found at Blanchard Dam. Loose and matrix specimens of staurolite, including both types of twins, can be found in the gravels and weathered outcrop south of the dam. They are as much as an inch in length and are of dark brown color.
Collecting Fees: None.
Rockhound Tools Needed: Sieve or screen for sifting sand, hand rake, hand trowel, small bucket, container, or bag for collecting specimens. Possibly a dry change of socks and shoes in case your feet get wet. Digging for cross rocks in the river banks using shovels or other implements is not legal to do.
Difficulty of Collection Site: A short hike is required to reach the collecting location. The path includes hiking downhill to reach the river and uphill to exit. (2/10)
Safety Considerations: We will be on the shore of the Mississippi River. Please approach or enter the water with great caution.
Other Considerations: Collecting will be rain or shine, except if there is lightning.
