TRIP LEADER: Jennifer Sorenson
TRIP DESCRIPTION: We are going to be collecting staurolite along the shoreline of the Mississippi River at the Blanchard Dam near Royalton. Here’s a nice article about staurolite: https://geology.com/minerals/staurolite.shtml
TYPE OF MINERAL/ROCK COLLECTED: Staurolite
WHERE AND WHEN WE WILL MEET: Holiday Gas Station in Royalton, MN (208 US-10, Royalton, MN 56373) on Sunday, September 20th, 2020 at 9:00 am.
VEHICLE RESTRICTIONS: None
COLLECTING FEES: None
ROCKHOUND TOOLS NEEDED: Absolutely no shovels, large tools or equipment can be used to dig. It is very illegal. You can bring small hand rakes, hand trowels, screen sieve set and a small container or bucket.
DIFFICULTY OF COLLECTION SITE: Need to be able to walk down the stairs or sloped path to the river and back up again to parking lot. Shoreline of the Mississippi is flat and sandy with lots of rocks (some very large) and driftwood, and the paths along the river are narrow. Not wheelchair friendly. 1/10
- Use tools to dig into and under areas you can’t see. I saw lots of glass and lots of people fishing while I was there. No one needs a fish hook taken out or stitches put in.
- There is poison ivy everywhere. I’d highly suggest closed toe shoes, pants, and a long sleeve shirt. If you’re highly reactive to poison ivy, this might no be the best trip for you
