DESCRIPTION:Since 1945\, the mission of the Minnesota Mineral Club has been to encourage interest and education in geology\, mineralogy\, lapidary and earth sciences.  \n\n\n\nMultiple attempts over the past 80 years have been made to create a physical location that could be the enduring home of the MMC\, act as a classroom\, be a space for club meetings\, AND a workshop with access to lapidary equipment and training\, but all have failed… UNTIL NOW.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new chapter is beginning on Saturday\, Sept. 6\, 2025 with the Grand Opening of the new clubhouse — The Rockhaus. Your 2025 Minnesota Mineral Club Board of Directors and Clubhouse Committee invite you to join the celebration between 1:00pm-4:00pm. The event is an open house format so come anytime to ask some questions\, look around\, see the equipment\, see what capabilities there are and visit with other members. DESCRIPTION:What and Where\n\n\n\nWe are going to venture to the Lakewood Hills Park in White Bear Lake (address and map link below). We would like to meet you all in the main parking lot\, which sits behind the YMCA and the White Bear Arena by 1:55pm. Class will run from 2pm-4pm as usual and we ask that parents hang out nearby during that time.  \n\n\n\nThe current weather prediction is looking good for us that day but we are planning on conducting the class in one of the covered structures. As we get closer to the 27th\, we will keep an eye on the weather and let you know if anything changes.  \n\n\n\n\n\nLakewood Hills Park2110 Orchard LnWhite Bear Lake\, MN 55110 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBring to Meeting\n\n\n\nFirst\, we are going to be doing some sand painting 👀 for one of the activities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo\, kiddos need to make a simple sketch of something they would like to paint. Simple is the key here… see how the examples above are made of large open shapes — encourage your kids to sketch something in a similar way.The sketch should fit into an area that is 5.5″ x 4″. \n\n\n\nSecond\, sand is small so having a good magnifier helps us see the details of the grains. Pick up a magnifying glass or a loupe and have the kids bring it to class. Geologists and rockhounds frequently need magnification so I recommend a loupe because they are small and easy to carry around. Here is a good one on Amazon. \n\n\n\nA sketch and a loupe\, that’s it!

Kids are welcome to work through the activities on their own. Dr. Bill Cordua will be presenting via zoom on The Rock Elm Meteor Impact Structure\, Pierce County\, WI: discovery and geology. The Rock Elm structure has been recognized as a geological anomaly for over a century. Known for gold and diamond finds\, it has attracted the attention of prospectors\, charlatans and scientists. The program focuses on how science has unraveled this feature’s fascinating origin and history. Dr. Bill Cordua is a retired professor from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls where he taught geology for 40 years. He has published many technical articles and written over hundreds of articles for the general public on geology. This includes a monthly column for the Minnesota Mineral Club newsletter. DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce we will be having a guest speaker from NASA’s Space Ambassador program. Kevin Cole is an Assistant Professor of Earth Science and Astronomy in the Math/Science Department of Harper College and his talk\, titled “DART\, Hera\, and Planetary Defense”\, will educate us on planetary defense and the threat of potentially harmful asteroid impacts. He has been involved in meteorite analysis and classification (using the electron-probe micro-analyzer at the University of Illinois-Chicago) for the Planetary Studies Foundation. In addition\, he holds a position as a public lecturer for the Cernan Earth and Space Center\, Triton College. DESCRIPTION:Our May Club meeting will include brief club proceedings and then we will jump right into our Annual Club Auction! \nOur annual Club Auction is one of our biggest Club fundraising activities. We will have a “Live” auction segment to go along with the Silent Auction. The success of this event in the past has been thanks to the charitable donations of our friends and members. \nDonations are greatly appreciated! We already have donations from Kingsley North\, Hi-Tech Diamond\, ZRS Fossils & Gifts and several club members! \nHere is the schedule:\n6:00-6:30pm – Arrival/Socializing\, Donate\, Receive Bidding Number\n6:30-6:45pm – Club Proceedings\n6:45-7:05pm – Round 1 Silent Auction Bidding\n7:05-7:15pm – 3 to 5 Tables close\, Live Auction Item Bidding\n7:15-7:30pm – Round 2 Silent Auction Bidding\n7:30-7:40pm – 3 to 5 Tables close\, Live Auction Bidding\n7:40-7:50pm – Round 3 Silent Auction Bidding\n7:50-8:00pm – 3 to 5 Tables close\, Live Auction Bidding\n8:00-8:30pm – Pay and pick up items won\n8:30-8:45pm – Wrap up/Clean up \nPlease RSVP here.
