Collecting Location: Blue Point Amethyst Mine
Location: Pearl, Ontario, Canada
Collecting Material(s): Thunder Bay Amethyst
Children: Youth under age 18 are not allowed to go into the mine but can hunt in the tailings piles only. This is Canadian law so there will be no exceptions.
Tools/equipment to bring:
  • Flat-tip chisel with handguard
  • Rock hammer or a one-handed sledge 3-4 lbs. and a larger sledge for those interested.
  • Plastic garden trowel or scoop (metal will break off the tips of the crystals).
  • Pry bar or large screwdriver – thin works well.
  • Kneeling pad or cushion, or knee guards.
  • Several pair of sturdy gloves – the crystal points can easily ruin gloves.
  • Bug spray, sun hat, water!
Safety Considerations/Rules: All persons entering the mine must BRING THEIR OWN, AND WEAR:
  • Steel Toe Boots
  • Hard Hat
  • Reflective Vest
  • Safety Glasses
Blasting Costs:
There is an opportunity for blasting within the mine prior to our arrival.  This final decision will be made closer to the trip date and the cost will be divided amongst the total number of attendees and is payable upon arrival at the mine.
$350 – For Approx 8-10 holes
$875 – For Approx 20-25 holes.
The mine will only be open for our group and even the owners will not search the mine area freshly blasted before we arrive.

Collecting Costs:
There is no fee to access the mine. Amethyst collected from the tailings piles is $30 USD / $40 CAD per 2-gallon bucket. Amethyst taken directly from the mine have a minimum base fee of $40 USD / $50 CAD per 2-gallon bucket. They scale up depending on what’s pulled out, but most buckets will be $50 CAD. The sliding scale is more for the exceptional diggers and the cost will be half of its retail value.

There is no limit to how much material you may collect.

Currency CAD/USD:
Please note that this is a remote location with no phone service, data, or internet access. Be sure to bring enough Canadian cash with you – especially in case you find a standout specimen. Jordan also accepts USD currency.

  • Thunder Bay KOA and many other campgrounds in the area
  • The closest hotels are in Thunder Bay which is about 45 minutes away.
